The New Cubans Opens at Galería Taller Gorría, Havana

Last week marked a milestone for The New Cubans with the opening of the exhibition at Galería Taller Gorría in Havana. To bring the project back to the city where it was conceived—after years of photographing, collaborating, and listening—felt like closing a perfect circle.

The night was unforgettable. Hundreds of people who appear in the book and photographs came to see themselves on the gallery walls, transforming the exhibition into something alive, collective, and deeply personal. At moments, it felt as though I had stepped inside my own photographs—faces, voices, and energy spilling from the frames into the crowd.

The celebration didn’t stop there. After the opening, the night carried on at Yarini, the rooftop music bar just upstairs, where the afterparty stretched late into Havana’s humid air. Music, dancing, and laughter made it clear that The New Cubans is not just an exhibition, but a shared experience with the community that inspired it.

This would not have been possible without the vision and generosity of many people. My heartfelt thanks to Adán Perrugoría, owner of Galería Taller Gorría, for opening his doors; to Jorge Peré, whose curatorial insight has been invaluable; and to Cristóbal Echevarría García, the gallery’s director, for his tireless dedication.

Presenting this project in Havana was more than an exhibition—it was a homecoming.
